This short talk is about Paying It Forward and the important of personal networking in the product management community. I share three personal vignettes from 2001, 2008 and 2016 to highlight why face-to-face networking is so important — and ways we can all Pay It Forward to build an even stronger product community. Highlights:
- Asking “how can I be of help” even when you’re the one asking for help
- Face-to-face personal networking pays off (although slowly)
- Each of us will be on the interviewee side of the desk sometime soon
- Why the best job candidates connect first with non-hiring-managers
This was recorded at Product Camp Silicon Valley 2017, held at Santa Clara’s Leavey School of Business on 25 March. Both audio and video are a bit rough, but I’ve distilled an audio-only version for those who prefer podcasts.
Running time: 21 minutes
